Circular Gastro System

Our Gastro Circular System (CGS) is a series of foodware products for closed-loop events, coffee shops and restaurants made from 100% biobased and biodegradable biopolymer blends. The foodware set offers a circular durable alternative to fossil fuel-based plastic cups and bowls for various events. The project merges material science and circular design to bring biomaterials to practice in collaboration with various stakeholders to close the loop.

Significantly better material

Despite global efforts to eliminate disposable synthetic plastics, their use remains prevalent, especially at large-scale events. In the UK alone, over 100 million plastic cups are used annually at festivals and live events, with most ending up in landfills. Developing a material that meets the stringent requirements of the gastro industry has been one of our most challenging endeavors.

Our material blend is biobased, durable, and certified for food contact. It withstands temperatures exceeding 100°C and can be reused and recycled multiple times before decomposing naturally into CO₂. This innovation marks a significant step toward addressing waste in the food and beverage sector.

A collaborative, systemic approach

CGS is a long-term initiative involving material scientists, circular designers, circular economy experts, event organizers, and waste management professionals. Beyond the product itself, we tested the closed-loop system at events in Bratislava to optimize the material lifecycle and consumer engagement.

The project addresses multiple layers of the challenge, proposing a systematic, design-driven approach that extends beyond merely introducing bioplastic materials to products. By tackling the entire lifecycle of materials and systems, CGS seeks to create a holistic solution for a sustainable future.
